Entrepreneur - One Man One Mission One Million One Year

Help Yourself To A Slice Of Internet Pie
Friday January 20th 2006, 9:26 am

I did most of my Christmas shopping online this year and it seems that I wasn’t alone. In the ten weeks run up to Christmas, UK shoppers spent a whopping five billion pounds online - up from 3.33 billion in 2004 - according to research just published by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG).

There’s no doubting that the internet has radically changed the way we buy goods and services and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Since starting its index of online spending in April 2000, IMRG has seen monthly sales rise from £87 million to £2.264 billion. UK consumers spent £19.2 billion on goods and services during 2005, 32% more than 86 million to in 2004, and IMRG is predicting sales of £26 billion for 2006.

£26 billion pounds can bake a very big pie and the beauty of the internet is that you don’t have to be a Blue Chip company to claim your slice of it (indeed, through affiliate marketing, many blue chip companies will even share their slice with you too). There are now thousands of people in the UK who work from home and make a living thanks to the internet.

And their overheads can be minimal. A website like this one costs less than £1 a week to host and the domain name costs about £3 a year to register (the minimum term for registering a .co.uk domain name is in fact two years, whereas a .com is renewable annually). I use the fabulous (and free) Wordpress to manage the content with any extra design work (I use the term loosely) being done using Dreamweaver (not cheap, but will pay for itself over and over again). On top of that you will need a computer and an internet connection, but chances are you have those anyway.

So is 2006 going to be the year that you help yourself to some internet pie?
