Do Women Make Better Entrepreneurs Than Men?
Friday January 27th 2006, 11:57 am

Tonight on BBC2, The Money Programme is focusing on the success of women in business under the banner of Filthy Rich And Female. You can watch it via the internet if you’re not in the UK.

According to the Inland Revenue, there are now more women millionaires between the ages of 18 and 44 than there are men. A fact that surprised me and will no doubt surprise quite a few other people (mostly men at a guess).

Judith Wilson is one such lady, having amassed a fortune of over £75 million through buying property, and she makes an interesting point on the programme about the difference between men and women.

“I do know of other people, and I’m afraid I’m talking of men, who have gone into business and made a success of it, probably become bored and gone into another business and then another one, and their whole core activity has gone out of the window.”

For a long time now, I’ve held the belief that when the going gets tough, it’s usually the fairer sex that get going. Not men. And in business that’s a fantastic characteristic to have. Not least because success rarely comes as a hot dish served on a plate.

And Judith is spot on about men more likely to be serial entrepreneurs than women. At least as far as I’m concerned anyway. I flit from project to project at a moment’s notice, sometimes to my benefit and sometimes to my detrement. In sharp contrast, my wife works until the task at hand is completed and then moves on to the next one.

I take comfort in the fact that one of the world’s greatest ever people, Leonardo Da Vinci, was a flitter. Despite painting some of the world’s most celebrated pictures, he actually finished very few. And despite having the vision to foresee everything from the helicopter to contact lenses, he never actually got round to publishing any of his plans for great inventions.

But then again I’m no Leonardo Da Vinci. So maybe a little less flitting is in order if I’m ever going to help redress the gender balance in the millionaire stakes.
