Sport.co.uk Sells For £135,000
Saturday January 26th 2008, 1:06 pm

Another UK domain name has sold for big bucks - this time it’s sport.co.uk which was bought by Media Corp for £135,000.

It follows on from 2007 where plenty of UK domain names changed hands for five and six figure sums, including recycle.co.uk (£150,000 - a record for a .co.uk domain name), mobile.co.uk (£120,000), fly.co.uk (£87,500) and connected.co.uk (£80,000). And bargain of the year had to be phones.co.uk which is surely worth far more than the £45,000 paid for it last year.

Mediacorp plan to develop sport.co.uk during the first quarter of 2008 “with the aim of it becoming a worldwide provider of comprehensive sports statistics and information. All facts and figures on matches, athletes, teams, results, competitions, tournaments, stadiums and sponsors will be provided in what eventually aims to be one of the world’s largest sports information websites.”

Of course their other aim will be to capitalise on the development of the domain name by eventually selling it on - just as they did with casino.co.uk which was sold for £3.625 million in August, 2007, to Gaming Portals Limited.

It’s information like the above that inspires me to keep building my own portfolio of domain names and to develop them to the best of my ability. It also makes me think that my plan to devote most of my time to developing one main site a year while still maintaining my other sites is indeed the best way forward.

PS It looks like I’m on course to break the US$2,000 a month barrier with Google Adsense for the first time today! Happy days!
