Here Comes The Summer!

Times flies when you’re enjoying yourself – and that’s certainly been the case this year. I can’t believe it’s almost the end of June, a time when my sporadic posts become even more so because I like to take much of July and August off.

This year’s going to be no different – except I may give some more thought to the future of entrepreneur.co.uk over the Summer and may change its direction before the end of the year.

So what have I been up to of late? Buying and registering domain names for one, with my portfolio now approaching the 2,000 mark. Some I buy off of other people (hamburg.co.uk for example which came with a small site), some I register when others let the registration lapse and some are simply free to register.

I know most of the best names have apparently gone, but I always come across a few every month worth registering. Yesterday for example I picked up laptop-coolers.co.uk after buying a new one for myself online. Won’t take much work to build a site around laptop coolers and it’s the sort of small niche I like.

Before I forget, a fellow domainer, Lee Owen, has started a blog on his Squillions website. Lee’s a real character who obviously wears his heart on his sleeve (no doubt to his cost at times) and his blog is one of the most honest and most fascinating I’ve come across for a wee while. Definitely worth a visit.

I’ve also been developing a couple of new domains, with a couple more already in the pipeline for later this year. This is obviously the way forward although can be slow going. It can also take a year or two for a site to become established, but the early signs are good for my new babies.

And of course I’ve been working on my forthcoming book which I’m getting really excited about. No date set as to when it will be finished, but it’s coming together very nicely.

Talking of books, I’m currently reading a real eye-opener – Flat Earth News by Nick Davies. For a few years now I’ve felt that the quality of TV, print and online journalism has been going down hill fast and Flat Earth News explains why. He calls it “churnalism” whereby journalists increasingly rely on rewriting press releases rather than taking the time to investigate more pressing issues. If you only read one book this Summer, make it this one.

Enjoy the Summer and if I don’t post anything while I’m off, see you in September.
