Can You See The Wood For The Trees Over At Acorn Domains?
I’ve not been buying as many domain names of late for no better reason than I’ve enough to keep me busy for a lifetime. And then some. But I’ve just added a handful more to my portfolio thanks to a post on Acorn Domains. A number of names are being sold on an auction basis with bids starting at £10. And some quite good names too. Buy It Now prices were also added and these BIN prices were subsequently reduced mostly to £50 or less. I might be losing the plot, but to me if a domain name has legs (as in as far as development is concerned it’s a runner) it has to be worth £50 in anybody’s book. In fact that’s nothing to pay for a domain name that will continue to earn you money for years to come. And yet there are people bidding £10 for a name, £15 for a name, hoping that come the end of the auction they will get it for buttons. Newsflash! The £50 BIN price is buttons! Here’s what I have bought (subject to nobody contacting the seller before me away from the thread). Benefitadvice.co.uk – Thousands of people seek benefit advice every day. Many no doubt would like to seek that advice without going through official channels. Is there potential then for a website called benefitadvice.co.uk? Without a doubt. The BIN was £50. It may well be worth £500. Pornindustry.co.uk – Sex is big business online. No doubt about that. Could a website devoted to news about the porn industry be a success? I think so. And what better name than pornindustry.co.uk? Again, bought for £50. mobileunlockingcodes.co.uk – Unlocking mobile phones. Again something that does well online and a nice name to add to others I have related to unlocking phones. Paid £30. cookingchannel.co.uk / cookerychannel.co.uk – Can you imagine a digital TV channel called the Cooking Channel? Showing wall to wall Jamie Oliver programmes, Ready Steady Cook repeats and the like? I can. And if they want the domain name cookingchannel.co.uk I’ll happily part with it. Or what about a similar “channel” streaming live over the internet? Broadband has made internet TV a reality. I paid £70 for the two names. Personally I believe they are worth at least ten times that. Maybe 100 times that. There are a few others there that are certainly worth far more than the BIN. Take a look. There might be something there for you (auction closes at 4pm today). Too many people undervalue domain names. Even many of those who are right there on the frontline. Times may be tight, but countless numbers of great new internet businesses will be launched over the next decade. And every one will need a domain name. I think a few people will be kicking themselves come 4 o’clock today if they cant see the wood for the trees. |
