Why I Bought £8,000 Worth of Bras For Christmas
Don’t worry. This isn’t a sorry tale of me buying a job lot of ladies underwear on eBay.
Just before Christmas I made my biggest domain name purchase of 2008 – splashing out just over £8,000 for bras.co.uk. In fact it’s the most I’ve ever spent on a domain name to date and, not surprisingly, it’s quickly made its way to the top of my “domain names to be developed” pile as I look to recoup some of that investment during this coming year.
My plan is to start developing it over the coming months with a five year plan of becoming one of the biggest bra sites in the UK. And I’m hoping that the domain name itself will go a long way to helping me achieve my aim.
How will it make money? Well, for its main source of income I’ll be looking to work with bra and lingerie retailers who have affiliate marketing schemes in place and who will pay me a commission for sales that come via the bras.co.uk website. To recoup my £8,000 investment, I’ll need to make around £100,000 worth of sales – something that I believe is definitely achievable within two or three years. Maybe sooner.
It’s a brand new market to me and I’ll be taking the opportunity to develop two or three related sites at the same time to make best use of the research time required to get the bras.co.uk website up and running. So for example I’ll be launching a site called Nice Legs dedicated to tights, stockings, socks and other legwear (the nicelegs.co.uk domain name only cost me the registration fee if my memory serves me correctly).
So what made me buy a domain name like bras.co.uk anyway?
Well it ticked all of the boxes that in my eyes make a great domain name.
It is short, memorable, easy to spell and needs little by way of introduction. A website called bras.co.uk will almost certainly sell bras. One word domain names generally do exactly what it says on the tin. Above all it lends itself to the specialist style of website that I like best and that I have found most success with.
Deciding what to pay for a domain name isn’t the most exact of sciences. I believe most people don’t appreciate the true value of a quality domain name – and that includes a lot of people who make their living via the internet. I worked out what I thought the name was worth and what I was willing to pay for it. Suffice to say I think I got it at a very good price, but time will tell.
Anyway, I’ll keep you posted on how I get on with developing bras.co.uk. Meantime, if you are a merchant that sells bras and are looking for a new affiliate to work with you know where I am.
