I Think I’ve Found The Next Million Pixel Idea
Back in 2005, then 21 year old student, Alex Tew, came up with an idea to make a million dollars from a website. He would offer a total of one million pixels for sale at US$1 each and anyone could buy them in blocks of US$100 to display an ad or logo, together with a link to their own site.
On paper it looked like a non-starter. I personally wouldn’t have given the idea the time of day. But rather incredibly, a wave of media attention saw Alex reach his goal of making a million dollars in less than four months.
I don’t know anyone who heard about this story who didn’t spend time trying to think of the next million pixel idea. I know I certainly did, but came up empty handed.
Fast forward to today and I think I’ve found the next million pixel idea that will make a million dollars. Or in this case a million pounds.
About a year ago, Chrissie Starkey saw a house for sale that is everything she had ever dreamed of, but with a price tag just shy of a million pounds, the 28 year old textile teacher and mother of two simply doesn’t have that kind of money. But she does have something far more powerful than money. An idea. An idea to raise a million pounds via a (rather beautiful) website, A Million Jobs To Do.
Everyone of us always seems to have a million jobs to do. Jobs that vary in size and complexity, but often never get done given our busy schedules.
Chrissie Starkey wants to do those jobs for you. It could be something as small as sewing on a button for £1 or something lengthier and more time consuming, like buying, writing and mailing all of your Christmas cards for a larger fee. As long as the job is appropriate, it will be considered, and Chrissie promises to complete any jobs to the best of her ability.
In one way the idea is flawed. Like us all, Chrissie only has 24 hours in a day. She has a job, she has a family and she has her own million jobs to do. But that won’t matter.
It’s only a matter of time before Chrissie is sitting on the BBC breakfast couch explaining her idea to millions of viewers. You will see her face in the national papers. You’ll be offering her a job yourself.
This is an idea that has legs and if the media catch hold of it, you can be sure it will run and run. And the publicity will see job offers flooding in. When this happens, Chrissie will be able to cherry pick the most profitable jobs to do and will be on her way to moving in to that dream house of hers.
The good news is we are all just one idea away from a million pounds. We all have it in us to be the next Alex Tew and my money’s on Chrissie being the proof of the pudding.
