Domain Names – It Must Be Love

Inbetween other things, I’ve spent the last few days tidying up a chapter about domain names for my book, Get Out While You Can.

It’s no secret that I love domain names. I can’t think of any other investment that offers the returns domain names do. And I’m not just talking the headline big money sales either.

To me a domain name is akin to a plot of land. It can be developed into virtual property, a website, and until work starts can be used to display the internet equivalent of roadside hoardings, either by way of a domain parking company or a one page holding page or even a mini website carrying advertising. It can be sold undeveloped o developed.

A domain name is even better than a plot of land however because it is portable. And I don’t know anywhere where you can buy plots of land for little more than a fiver (unless of course you are into buying plots of land on the moon).

In Get Out While You Can, I spell out everything you need to know about domain names – right from how to register one through to domain name valuation (a far trickier subject than most realise) and dropcatching pre-loved domains.

I’ve also bought a few names myself this month, including some UK geo domain names. Today I completed the purchase of Thurso.co.uk which I plan to develop into a tourist site for what is the UK’s most northerly town. Guess where I’ll be going this Summer! I also acquired a few names as part of a package that I have no use for including Murton.co.uk and Cippenham.co.uk. Both are for sale for £500 each. If you are local to either place, you might be interested in developing them.

Haven’t picked up much on the drops of late – was really pleased to get OnlineDivorces.co.uk to add to my collection of divorce-related names – even if it did drop on St Valentine’s Day . . .

PS Bargain buy of the year (unfortunately not by me) – Gold.co.uk for £42,050.
